Cat Tick

There is no specific specie of tick that goes by the common name Cat tick. There are many different ticks that can target your pussycat, depending on where you are based in the world. More commonly in the UK, the Sheep, Castor Bean, Deer, Hedgehog and Dog tick are found on cats. Ticks are nasty parasites that can carry and transmit many infections and diseases from animal to animal and also animal to human. If your pet is infested or has been bitten, you will want to remove it immediately, in a safe and controlled way.

Conduct regular checks - Your cat is more likely to be attacked by a tick if it spends a lot of time outdoors in areas where they are prevalent (woodland, meadows, farmland to name a few). If your pet is kept indoors then it is less likely to be a target, unless you or another pet brings one into the home. If there is an infestation in your home, you must look to have it exterminated a.s.a.p. and see that all your pets are thoroughly checked and treated.

Control - To prevent your pussycat being bitten by ticks, it would be helpful to understand where these parasites may be and how they work. Most species have a four stage lifecycle (egg, larvae, nymph and adult) and to develop into the next stage they must feed on a blood host. Larvae, nymphs and adults could fall or crawl onto your feline if it comes into contact with them (although adult ticks prefer larger hosts). Therefore, controlling your yard and home to be as parasite and pest-free as possible will help your housepet. Mow the lawns short and cut back shrubs, trees and any over grown vegetation where they may hide. Place a barrier around your property (such as a fence or border of repelling plants) to prevent other animals and pests transporting them into your yard. Treat the yard and home with insecticides (safely) when the cat is away from the home and ensure that you and your pets wear an effective repellent. All pet bedding and baskets should be regularly cleaned and sanitized. Vacuuming each day and blocking easy entrances for parasites into the home may also help.

Repellents and Symptoms - Repellents can be purchased over the internet or could be advised by your local veterinarian. Always use a parasite repellent on your cat during tick season and conduct a thorough check of your pet throughout the year on a regular basis for ticks. If your cat is healthy and sustains a nutritional balanced diet, it should have a strong immune system to help fight any tick bites. Not all tick bites will infect your cat with a disease - in fact a very small percentage do, however if the cat is very unfortunate and does contract a disease via a tick bite then there are many symptoms that you could look out for such as:

Remove Tick from Cat

If you find a your pussycat is bitten and the parasite is embedded in the poor kitty's skin, look to have it removed as soon as possible. Ensure that you let your veterinarian know the bite was from a tick as it may help with their diagnosis if your pet becomes unwell. Monitor any change in character and act on it if it occurs, as treatment should be pursued promptly to avoid complications with health. Prevention is always better than treatment, so look at ways to keep your animals safe.
